February is Black History Month, and it was created to encourage us to take time from our often-busy schedules to acknowledge the history of African Americans in the United States and celebrate the rich contributions Black Americans have contributed to society.
Every year, many businesses and organizations recognize the importance of Black History month and develop events and programming to highlight achievements in the Black community that may have been overlooked in the classroom or did not make it into our history books. This year, Google Arts & Culture is launching a new site celebrating 20 Black innovators, from video game pioneer Jerry Lawson to academic pioneer Dr. Carter Woodson. To bring us this new endeavor, Google partnered with organizations like the Strong Museum of Play and the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
There are several ways you too can honor Black History Month, including but not limited to supporting Black-Owned Businesses, donating to charities that support equity and equality for African Americans, learning and supporting Black women, and one of our favorites at Books After Dark, purchasing, reading, and sharing books by Black Authors.
